Worts

A series of artworks illustrating the medicinal uses of weeds.

Exploring metaphorical and anthropomorphic visual details to depict each plant's qualities:
medicinal uses, healing properties and dangers, methods of intake and extraction processes, folklore, historical and modern use within medicine, and the varied etymology of each plant name e.g. the name Dandelion comes from the french words dent-de-lion which translates as Lions teeth alluding to the flower heads which are Lion's mane–like and the leaves which are teeth-like.

My aim was to explore the relaying of information, instruction and warnings without the need for words. I've been gardening for a few years, and struggled to remember the medicinal uses of some plants, I wanted to create a visual method of memorising the elements.

Some of these prints are available in my shop, click here for more details..
